Jess' Story

“When I’m in the Op Shop, I feel I can truly be myself and express myself. I really enjoy working there and want to be there as often as I can. Volunteering in the shop is good for my confidence as I get to hone my skills serving and talking to customers.”

About the Shops

Drug ARM Op Shops sell second hand clothing, bric a brac, books, accessories and homewares to raise funds to support the counselling, outreach and education missions of the organisation.

Powered by volunteers, the Op Shops are a great outlet for people who want to get creative, have fun and make friends.

We operate three Op Shops. They are in Toowoomba, Brisbane’s Capalaba and Brisbane’s Kelvin Grove.

We are actively seeking volunteers to assist in our Capalaba Op Shop and in our new Op Shop located within the Kelvin Grove QUT Education Precinct off Musk Ave. If you would like to get involved, please get in contact.

Locations

  • Toowoomba, 38 South Street, Centenary Heights
  • Capalaba, 25/200 Old Cleveland Road
  • Kelvin Grove, Shop 4/31 Musk Avenue

Role Overview

As a volunteer in the Op Shop, your main role is to welcome, greet and serve customers in a friendly, proactive and helpful manner.

We ask that you volunteer for at least one shift per week or fortnight. A shift is usually a half day or a full day.

  • Operate the register
  • Assist with cash handling in line with relevant Op Shop procedures
  • Report discrepancies and problems to the Op Shop Manager
  • Follow direction as requested by the Op Shop Manager
  • Maintain confidentiality with regards to information relating to the store, customers, procedures and security
  • Adhere to workplace health and safety policies and procedures in order to ensure your own safety and that of others in the workplace

How to Volunteer

If you are interested in volunteering, there are a few steps to take before you can start.

  1. Check that you meet our volunteering requirements

To volunteer in a Drug ARM Op Shop you must:

  • Meet the minimum age for employment
  • Complete a National Police Check (at Drug ARM’s cost)
  1. Fill in an application form

Make an online enquiry to receive a volunteer form or request a printed copy by visiting us in store. We will also provide you with a National Police Check application which we will submit on your behalf.

If you are volunteering to meet Mutual Obligation Requirements through Centrelink, please let us know when you submit your form. We have printed copies of your Centrelink forms in store.

  1. Interview Process

After you fill in your form, you will have a short interview with the Op Shop Manager. This is to check that the shop is a good fit for you.

  1. Start Date

Once you have completed an interview and we have reviewed your National Police Check, the local Op Shop Manager will talk to you about joining the roster. You will also be asked to complete some online training which you can do in store if you do not have a home computer.

  1. Training

Your training will be a combination of online learning modules and on the job training. Volunteering is a process of continual learning so if you aren’t sure about something – ask!

  1. Have fun!

Volunteering is both rewarding and challenging. Enjoy your time with your fellow volunteers and gain new skills along the way.
